Royal Enfield on rent in Rishikesh

We run five Royal Enfields — Royal Enfield Hunter 350, Royal Enfield Classic 350, Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 and Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 — and the honest answer to "which one should I take" depends entirely on what you're riding to. A bike that's perfect for a highway cruise to Haridwar is the wrong choice for a week to Kedarnath, and vice versa.

Choosing honestly

Hunter 350 for town riding and your first Enfield. It's the lightest of the five by a real margin, which matters more than it sounds like it should when you're threading through Tapovan traffic or doing a U-turn on a narrow lane. Good for Neelkanth and Kunjapuri as day trips.

Classic 350 for the highway cruise and the photo you came for. Heavier, more planted at speed, and — let's be honest — it's the bike everyone pictures when they picture a Royal Enfield in Rishikesh. Ground clearance is modest though, so keep it to tarmac.

Guerrilla 450 if you want the new engine without the adventure-bike bulk. Same liquid-cooled Sherpa 450 engine as the Himalayan 450, in a lighter, lower roadster body. The most fun bike we own on good tarmac — not built for rough mountain diversions.

Himalayan 411 for anything with broken road in it, on a budget. Chardham, Chopta, Kedarnath, Badrinath — the proven, air-cooled Himalayan generation, at a lower rate than the 450.

Himalayan 450 for the same mountain routes, on our newest bike. Liquid-cooled, more power, and the current-generation Himalayan — the pick if you want the newest machine and don't mind paying more for it. Seat height is taller on both Himalayans than the Hunter or Classic; if you're under about 5'4", test-sit it at the shop before booking for a multi-day trip.

First time on a 350? Here's what actually changes

If your riding experience so far is a 100-150cc commuter bike, three things feel different in the first few kilometres on any of our Enfields: the clutch bite point sits a little higher, the extra weight means slower manoeuvres at walking pace need a firmer, more deliberate push, and the front disc brake has noticeably more stopping power than you're used to — grab it gently at first rather than trusting your old bike's muscle memory. None of this is difficult, but knowing it before you leave the shop beats discovering it at the first junction.

What we service before every mountain rental

A bike that's fine for a flat day in town isn't automatically fine for six hours of switchbacks with a loaded pillion. Before any Chardham, Chopta or Kunjapuri-sunrise booking, we personally check:

• Chain tension and lubrication
• Brake pads, front and rear, plus fluid level
• Tyre pressure and tread depth
• Clutch cable play, and we hand over a spare cable on any multi-day mountain booking
• Lights and horn — you'll want both on early starts and hill fog

Riding a 350 in the hills if you've only ridden a 150 in the city

The extra weight of a 350 actually works in your favour once you're moving — it holds a line through a corner better than a lighter bike gets pushed around by wind and camber. The adjustment is mostly in the first hour: heavier at a standstill, needs a firmer push to get rolling from a dead stop on an incline, and the engine braking on the way down a hill is stronger than you're used to, which is a good thing once you trust it. If you're nervous, do a short loop toward the waterfalls before you commit to a longer day.
