A bike trip itinerary for Neelkanth Mahadev, hour by hour

Our Neelkanth route page covers the road itself — which route to take, which bike, where it gets steep. This one is about the day around the ride: what time to leave, how long darshan actually takes, and when to turn back so you're not descending the forest stretch after dark.

Why this temple specifically

Neelkanth Mahadev sits in dense forest at roughly 1,330m, about 32km from Laxman Jhula. It's associated with the Samudra Manthan story — the spot where Shiva is said to have consumed the poison churned from the ocean — which is part of why it draws a steady stream of pilgrims alongside the riders doing it as a scenic day trip.

The day, hour by hour

8:00 AM — Collect the bike. Give the brakes and horn a once-over before you leave the shop, even though we've already checked them. It's your ride for the day; get comfortable with it in the yard, not on the first hairpin.

8:30 AM — On the road. Head out toward the barrage. The first stretch is ordinary town riding; the climb doesn't start until you're past it.

9:15 AM — The scenic stretch. This is where the road opens up to valley views and, depending on the season, small roadside waterfalls. Stop properly rather than slowing down mid-lane for a photo — there's rarely a hard shoulder on the tighter sections.

10:00 AM — Arrival and parking. Informal bike parking near the temple entrance, a short walk in past stalls selling puja items and prasad.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM — Darshan. Budget more time than you think on a weekend or during Shivratri, when queues run long. There's a natural spring at the complex where devotees bathe — bring a change of clothes if you plan to.

12:30 PM — Lunch. A local dhaba near the temple does simple food — parathas, dal, chai — and it's genuinely one of the better lunch stops on any of our routes.

1:30 PM — Head back. Leaving by early afternoon means you're not fighting fading light on the forest stretch, where we'd rather you weren't riding after dark anyway — see the wildlife note on the route page.

3:30 PM — Back in Laxman Jhula. Return the bike, or keep it if you've rented for longer.

A few things worth knowing before you go

Which bike

See our full breakdown on the route page — short version: a Hunter 350 handles the hairpins best, an Activa is fine solo but not ideal two-up on the climb.

Early start, easy day — one of our most-booked routes.
