Documents needed to rent a bike in Rishikesh

Short answer, up front: your original driving licence, plus Aadhaar or a passport, plus a refundable deposit. Here's the fuller version, including what we've seen go wrong at other counters.

For Indian nationals

• Original driving licence, covering the vehicle category you're renting — a car-only licence doesn't cover a motorcycle.
• Aadhaar card or another government photo ID.
• Security deposit, refundable at return — see current amounts on our rate list.

For foreign nationals

• Passport and a copy of your current Indian visa.
• Original driving licence from home, covering motorcycles.
• International Driving Permit, obtained before you left home — it can't be arranged in India. Full detail in our foreigner's rental guide.
• Security deposit, same as above.

What actually happens at the counter

It's a five-minute process, not a negotiation. You show your documents, we check the licence covers the bike category you want, we photograph what we need to keep on file, and we walk around the bike with you noting the fuel level and any existing marks or scratches before you sign. Deposit goes down, receipt comes out, helmet gets fitted, and you're on your way. If anything about that process feels rushed or skipped at any shop — not just ours — that's worth a second thought before you hand over money.

For monthly and long-stay rentals

The document requirement doesn't change for a longer booking — same licence, same ID, same deposit structure. What does change is the paperwork sits with us for the length of your stay rather than being redone daily, and we keep a note of your expected return date so nothing gets awkward if your plans shift by a few days. If you've lost your licence while travelling

This happens more than you'd think, especially with foreign travellers moving between multiple destinations. If your original is lost or still in transit, talk to us directly — we can't rent without seeing a valid licence, but we've dealt with this often enough to talk through the realistic options, which usually involve a police report and either a temporary replacement or adjusting your travel plans slightly.

Why we photograph rather than keep your original

Some shops in Rishikesh keep a customer's original licence or passport for the duration of the rental. We photograph documents instead wherever the booking allows it — you keep your own ID on you, which matters if you need it for a hotel check-in, a bank, or simply peace of mind while you're travelling. A shop that insists on holding your original passport for a same-day rental is worth being cautious of.

Deposit norms

Deposits are refundable, paid in cash or UPI, with a receipt given at handover. Ours run ₹3,000 for a scooty and ₹5,000 for a motorcycle — full detail on the price list. We note any existing scratches or damage with you before you ride off, so there's nothing to dispute when you bring it back.

What a legitimate shop should and shouldn't ask for

Should: a real licence check, a clear deposit amount stated up front, a quick note of existing damage before you leave.

Shouldn't: your original passport held with no receipt, a vague "pay whatever you think is fair" deposit with nothing written down, or a bike handed over with zero paperwork at all — that last one might feel convenient in the moment, but it means no proof you were riding legitimately if you're stopped or if anything goes wrong.
