Chardham Yatra by bike — what it actually costs
Everyone asks the price of the bike. Almost nobody asks what the whole trip costs — and the whole-trip number is the one that actually matters when you're deciding whether to do this by motorcycle, by car, or as a packaged tour. Here's a realistic 12-day breakdown.
The variables
Your total depends mainly on: which bike you rent, how many nights you spend where, whether you trek or take a pony/helicopter at Kedarnath, and how much you spend on food. The table below uses a mid-range guesthouse budget and a Royal Enfield Himalayan rental as the baseline — adjust up or down from there.
12-day cost breakdown
| Item | What it covers | Realistic range |
|---|---|---|
| Bike rental | 12 days, Himalayan, see our Chardham packages | Ask for current package rate |
| Fuel | ~1,600km round trip at ~28-30 kmpl, current pump price | Calculate: distance ÷ mileage × price/litre |
| Stays | 10-11 nights, mid-range guesthouses | ₹800-1,800/night |
| Food | 3 meals/day, roadside dhabas to simple restaurants | ₹400-700/day |
| Kedarnath trek support | Pony, palki or porter if not trekking on foot | Varies by season and demand |
| Entry, parking, misc | Sonprayag parking, temple donations, tolls | ₹1,500-3,000 total |
| Contingency | Weather delays, minor repairs, buffer day | Add 10-15% to your subtotal |
Work the fuel line with today's actual pump price and your bike's real-world mileage — it moves the total more than any other variable, and it's the easiest one to get wrong by guessing.
Worked fuel example
At 28 kmpl and a 1,600km round trip, that's roughly 57 litres. Multiply by the current per-litre diesel or petrol price in Uttarakhand on the day you travel, and you have a solid fuel estimate — this is worth doing yourself right before you leave, since fuel prices shift.
Comparing against a car and driver
A car-and-driver package for the same circuit typically costs more per person once you're below a group of four, since you're paying for the vehicle and driver regardless of headcount, plus their meals and stays. A solo or two-up motorcycle trip usually comes out cheaper, with the tradeoff being that you're doing your own navigating, carrying your own gear, and taking the weather as it comes rather than sitting inside a car.
Comparing against a packaged tour
Fully packaged Chardham tours bundle transport, stays and sometimes food into one price, which is genuinely convenient but removes the flexibility that's a big part of why people choose to ride it themselves — stopping where you want, adjusting your pace for weather, and the ride itself being part of the trip rather than just transport between temples.
Where people overspend without meaning to
Guesthouse prices spike hard in peak season (May-June, September-October) if you're booking last-minute rather than ahead. Kedarnath trek support costs vary a lot by how late in the day you arrive at Gaurikund — earlier gets you better rates and availability. And a bike rented without a clear multi-day package can end up costing more than expected if fuel, deposit and day-rate math isn't done properly up front — see our Chardham rental page for what's included in a proper package.
